Just steps from Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, The Sauer Adobe is one of the city’s oldest surviving structures — and now home to Karson Butler Hospitality Co. Believed to have been built in the early to mid-1800s, the adobe reflects California’s layered past, from its Mission-era roots through the Mexican Rancho period and into the early days of statehood.
Over nearly two centuries, the adobe has evolved alongside downtown San Luis Obispo, serving as a residence, storefront, and gathering place — each chapter adding to its enduring charm. Its thick adobe walls remain a testament to early craftsmanship and the spirit of those who shaped this community.
Today, The Sauer Adobe enters a new chapter as the home of Karson Butler’s private design studio, gardens, and parlour — a place where history and hospitality meet, and where we’re honored to carry forward its legacy for generations to come.

Launching in 2026, The Bell Society is our exclusive circle of membership, offering private access to hand-selected, personally curated collections, workshops, intimate gatherings, and bespoke perks designed to elevate the art of entertaining.
Rooted in seasonality and thoughtful discovery, each Bell Society collection reflects what we’re loving that moment — from bottles we’ve discovered on our travels to makers, gifts, and entertaining pieces we reach for when hosting at home. Members receive priority access to the Sauer Adobe workshops, members-only offerings, and a 10% discount at the Ah Louis Store and Ah Louis Store Outpost year round.
The Bell Society takes its name from the bells of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa across the street — a daily reminder to pause, gather, and celebrate what matters.
Within the Bell Society, members may join in one of two ways: as part of The Peal or The Chime. In bell ringing, a peal is a full, celebratory sequence — rich, layered, and meant to be shared. A chime is lighter and rhythmic, marking moments and seasons as they come. Together, they reflect two ways of belonging — one deeper and more immersive, the other steady and seasonal — both special and rooted in the same spirit of gathering and generosity.

Rooted in friendship and fun, the club brings players of all levels together for relaxed open play nights hosted in the garden and entertaining parlor of the historic Sauer Adobe — a setting as charming as the company itself.
Members enjoy thoughtful perks including 10% off at The Ah Louis Store, complimentary access to Open Play Nights, first access to our Mahjong classes and discounted equipment rentals, making it easy to try our designer mats and tiles at home! All Bell Society collections may be shipped.
Wine shipping is subject to state regulations. Peal members who live in a state where we cannot ship wine to will receive a substitute product in their basket.

The yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini have a documented presence in this area for over 10,000 years. The tiłhini peoples have stewarded their ancestral and unceded homelands which include all of the cities, communities, federal and state open spaces within the San Luis Obispo County region. These homelands extend East into the Carrizo Plains toward Kern County, South to the Santa Maria River, North to Ragged Point, and West beyond the ocean’s shoreline in an unbroken chain of lineage, kinship, and culture.
